Playing tango. Playing tangos. Quite different things. Tango has never been my place in the world. I have never played in a typical orchestra nor have I accompanied singers. Even less so, playing tango off the cuff. I haven't even had that minimum curiosity to try it. But tangos are another story. My relationship with those beautiful songs is ingrained in my soul. They are part of who I am. My identity as a jazz musician has never felt threatened by turning to those melodies to speak in the first person. When I first approached them, it was as a game, and then as a way to tell my life story. I had long been obsessed with capturing Hank Jones' folk way of playing Ellington or delving into the soul of Bill Evans by listening to him play the music of Burt Bacharach or Johnny Mandel. That experience, those intentions, clearly marked my relationship with these tangos. Here are some of my favorite composers: Juan Carlos Cobián - the closest thing to Billy Strayhorn that the genre has given - Aníbal Troilo, the faithful balance, the elegant Francisco de Caro, and Mariano Mores, synonymous with the popular. This album is very special in my life. It’s because I am recording again after a long time -a time in which my life changed so much. And it’s the first album I am recording in my own house, with my own piano. At my own pace. And because it is a reunion with tangos. I never left them nor did I feel abandoned by them. But other things happened. Life happened. Don Osvaldo Pugliese would smile. That's how it is, we all return… credits Adrian Iaies, solopiano.
